Microneedling Q&A

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive aesthetic treatment that harnesses your body’s natural healing abilities to address common signs of aging, like wrinkles and sun damage, and tighten the skin. This nonsurgical procedure can rejuvenate dull skin and enhance your youthful glow with minimal downtime and long-term results.

How does microneedling work?

Microneedling stimulates collagen remodeling and cell regeneration to minimize the signs of aging. The treatment targets the two most common aging concerns:

Collagen loss

Collagen is a protein that builds your bones, muscles, and connective tissues. In your teens and 20s, collagen is abundant, giving your skin resilience. Around age 30, collagen levels start to decline. Your skin loses its youthful elasticity, causing it to sag and wrinkle.

Slow cell turnover

Age also slows the cell turnover process. When your cells regenerate quickly, surface damage fades. That’s why aging signs, such as brown spots and redness, begin to appear as you get older.

Microneedling uses a handheld device (SkinPen) with dozens of hair-thin needles to create micro-injuries in your skin that trigger your body’s healing response, which stimulates new collagen to repair the damage. Over time, this new collagen reduces wrinkles, tightens the skin, and encourages cell turnover to minimize the signs of aging.

What can I expect from microneedling?

When you arrive for your microneedling treatment, the team cleanses and purifies your skin. Before starting the treatment, they apply a topical anesthetic to reduce pain and discomfort.

Next, they roll the pen-like microneedling device across your skin to create small micro-wounds. The entire treatment takes about 30 minutes and requires little to no downtime.

How can I enhance my microneedling results?

The team often recommends platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, which is a derivative of your own blood that contains growth factors. It can accelerate the healing process and create more dramatic results.

After drawing your blood, it’s placed in a centrifuge to isolate the PRP and then applied to your skin after microneedling to enhance the anti-aging benefits.

Another way to enhance your microneedling results, is to add in a neurotoxin such as Botox or Jeauveau. When applied to the most superficial layers of the skin, neurotoxins reduce sebum/oil production, reduce pore size, and improve skin tone. This service is called MicroTox.

What can I expect after microneedling?

After microneedling, your skin may be red and inflamed. You can expect small spots of blood immediately after treatment, but this should subside before you leave the medical spa.

Initial improvements are typically visible within a few days of treatment, but full results appear about 4-6 weeks later. Most patients need about 3-6 treatments, spaced several weeks apart, to achieve their desired results.
